Do you feel stuck and overwhelmed trying to get back into a spiritual routine?
Are you wondering how to stay spiritually disciplined with your quiet time with Jesus?
We’ve got you. We are going to go through 6 ways you can get out of a spiritual rut that can help you to get back on track, and be disciplined in spending quiet time with Jesus.
Let’s get to it!
1. Change Your Quiet Time Routine
Sometimes the reason that you may be in a spiritual rut is that your quiet time routine with Jesus is becoming like a mundane task to complete. So a great way to get out of a spiritual rut is to disrupt your quiet time with Jesus routine by adding new things to do to grow your relationship with Him. That look like by taking your quiet time with Jesus outside, adding a devotional plan into the mix, setting an ambience with candles and a worship playlist playing in the background, starting off with writing out your prayers in a journal, and ending your quiet time with a gratitude list written down. Each day, week or month you switch it up and discover the routine you like and then stick with that going forward, and then every so often switch it up again so you don’t become complacent.
2. Stick to a Routine
Once you have found a routine that works, stick to it even if you don’t feel like it, that is a part of staying disciplined. If you need to write down a schedule of what you are doing each time during your quiet time to help you stick to it, go for it. When easing back into a routine don’t do too much so fast, ease yourself into it. You can start off by spending 15 mins, and then ease your way to it being 1-2 hours. Also, work out if you like doing your quiet time in the morning, or the evening, and consistently do it during the hours of that day.
3. Remove Distractions
Clutter in your environment can sometimes reflect the state of your mind. If your mind is not clear from clutter and distractions it can be a hard time to try and get out of a spiritual rut. So, wherever you do your quiet time make sure that your environment is clean and clear from distractions. Another thing you can do is to not have your phone on you. If you do, either switch it off, put it on silent, turn off notifications, put it on do not disturb, or use the web version of YouVersion or any other bible app that you use, that way you are not being distracted as you are spending time intentionally and quality time with God.
4. Go on a Date with God
Have a secret place with God where you go to spend intimate time with Him. It doesn’t always have to be in your room. Switch it up. Jesus would go up to the mountains by Himself and pray to the Father. You don’t have to go to the mountains, but get creative with spending time with Him. For example, if you are on a walk, utilise that time to speak to Him, and count your blessings as you are observing your surroundings. The next time you go to a cafe on your coffee break, why not bring your bible or a prayer journal and spend your quiet time with the Lord there? Make your time with God intimate and fun, when you go into it with that mindset it will feel special to be in the presence of God, instead of feeling like you are being forced.
5. Create a Worship Playlist
Having a worship playlist playing during your quiet time can change things up a bit. Create a worship playlist filled with songs that minister to your spirit, and therefore will help you to get into the presence of God once you begin your quiet routine. In some quiet time sessions, you can just be worshipping God through music; there is nothing wrong with that. The goal of spending time with God is that you are coming away learning more about Him, and you have things that you can practically apply in your life to become more like Him.
6. Group Bible Study
When trying to get back on track to spend time with Jesus in your quiet time, doing it by yourself can sometimes feel overwhelming. So, doing it with other people, who can also be your accountability partner can help ease you smoothly back into a spiritual routine. You can start off with doing a devotional plan together, and reflecting and discussing with each other what you have learnt, and will apply practically in your walk with Jesus, and keep each other accountable in doing that.
