THE PICTURE OF EVANGELISM

In today’s Wisdom Wednesday blog post I will be doing something a little different, let’s change things up. I will be taking you through a series of pictures through 2 ways; 1. Spot the Difference and 2. The Cycle of Evangelism, where they will be illustrating what evangelism is. But I will need you to first guess what these pictures are connoting about evangelism, and then I will explain.

Let’s go!

Verse Of The Day:

SPOT THE DIFFERENCE

What do you see? And what do you think evangelism means through this?

  • In the first picture you see that the person on the top of the mountain is happy that they’ve made it to the top but, has left the other person to help the person who is struggling to climb to the top of the mountain.
  • Compared to the second picture where the person at the top of mountain, even though he is at the top he still helps the middle man, who then helps the other person who is struggling to get to the top of the mountain.

We can get so caught up with the joy of being saved and the amazing grace of God, which is absolutely amazing. But then we can lose sight of our calling to “make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:18-20).

Be honest with yourself and ask yourself this question, have you been like the person in picture 1, where you have embraced salvation with both hands but failed to keep your hands out to help others who are lost, like you once were?

Salvation does not stop at you, there are others in this world who too need to hear the gospel, and it requires you to adhere to the calling of God that is upon EVERY believer to evangelise.

Evangelism is like a cycle, when you bring one person to Christ, that person can then spread the gospel and bring that person to Christ, and it just keeps on going until “this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then end will come” (Matthew 24:14).

THE CYCLE OF EVANGELISM

I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor.” (1 Corinthians 3:6-8)

Using the scripture to help you out, what do you think this picture illustrates about evangelism?

It is not a one-man job to evangelise, it takes the church; the body of Christ who all have their different parts to play to fulfil the ultimate goal to win souls.

As you can see that through the process of evangelising to an unbeliever, there are going to be different people along the way who may have also evangelised to the same person that you are currently evangelising to.

And without you even realising it, God has designated you a different yet specific role compared to the others but it is all according to one purpose; to share the gospel to the unbeliever, so that they can believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour.

You could either be the planter or the waterer but don’t forget that it is God who makes the person grow. Whether that be an unbeliever getting saved, or making a believer grow more in their relationship with Him.

Therefore, it is important you don’t get offended or upset when someone rejects the gospel. They are not rejecting you. Are they rejecting God? Yes, unfortunately.

But don’t start thinking that when you evangelise to the person that it was ineffective or a waste of time.

You did what you were called to do either plant the seed or water it.

Leave the rest to God, because the next person or people that come along will plant more seeds or pour more into the unbeliever which is only enabling the process for God to simultaneously grow the seed.

God will do the heavy lifting. But if you don’t do what you are called to do then there wouldn’t be a seed for God to grow.

Remember, your responsibility is to simply speak the message that God gives you which is to spread the gospel (if you want to understand what the gospel of salvation is, check out our Salvation series). You are not responsible for the reaction of others, but you will be held accountable for whether or not you obey God’s calling as there is a reward for your labour.

I encourage all of you to evangelise, but if you are afraid to do so, God has given us the Holy Spirit which gives us the power and boldness to share the gospel. And I pray like Paul requested for the Ephesians to pray on behalf of him, is that whenever you speak, words may be given to you so that you will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel (Ephesians 6:19).

But we also have a Faith Friday blog post coming out that will give you practical steps on how to evangelise, stay tuned for that. In the meantime, …

Stay Blessed,

Divine L.
