DOES GOD EXIST? 3 PROOFS OF GOD’S EXISTENCE

Have you questioned the existence of God?

Or do you believe in the existence of God but you don’t know how to prove His existence outside the use of the Bible?

This blog post will explain the existence of God using 3 natural theological arguments.

Let’s dive in!

1. The Cosmological Argument – The Universe had a Beginning

The cosmological argument demonstrates the principle of cause and effect. This means that each cause is the effect of a prior cause and each effect had some sort of cause. However, the chain of causes would need to have a start, because if the chain of causes could go infinitely into the past then that would mean it never actually started. So, logically something eternal would have to exist and is not itself the effect of anything else.

In other words, the universe is uncaused or not eternal, there was a beginning to space, time and matter at the Big Bang. Therefore, whatever created space, time and matter cannot be created by those things. So, the cause of the Big Bang must transcend space, time and matter.

The cause must be, spaceless, timeless, immaterial, powerful to create the universe out of nothing, and personal in order to choose to create (because to go from a state of nothingness to creation someone had to have made a choice, and only persons can make choices, impersonal forces don’t make choices), and intelligent to have a mind in order to make a choice.

God is spaceless, timeless, immaterial, powerful, personal and intelligent.

2. The Teleological Argument – The Fine-tuned Universe

The teleological argument claims that the appearance of design is itself evidence of a designer. Therefore, it is to refute the claim that what appears to be designed is simply by a random coincidence or by chance. The fine-tuning argument which is the application of the teleological argument argues that the existence of God is evident in the design of the universe, it appears to have been carefully arranged to allow there to be life.

Stephen Hawkings (a theoretical physicist) summed up that if the expansion rate of the universe were different by one part in a thousand million a second after the Big Bang, the universe would have collapsed back on itself or never developed galaxies. In other words, if the expansion rate of the universe at the very beginning was any different, even slightly, then life wouldn’t exist, and we wouldn’t be here.

What caused that expansion rate to be precisely what it needed to be? It seems to be the same Being that created space, time and matter is the same Being that fine-tuned the expansion rate of the universe so we could be here today.

So from the very beginning, the universe was fine-tuned which means you can’t say that it was by chance that it evolved. If the expansion rate was different then or different now we wouldn’t be here. Therefore, this would mean that the universe was fine-tuned by an intelligent Creator.

3. The Moral Argument – The Universal Lawgiver

The moral argument focuses on the concept of good and evil. Can morality be subjective? Is it an opinion to believe that murder is evil? If it is then it would mean that morality is meaningless. Or is there some unchanging standard? Then that would mean if God exists He would have to be morally perfect.

So, to argue over right or wrong we cannot be subjected to an opinion but we would have to appeal to a higher law that we assume everyone is aware of, hold to and is not free to randomly change. Therefore, right and wrong imply a higher standard of law, and the law requires a lawgiver. Now, because Moral Law transcends humanity (as we are imperfect beings), this universal law requires a universal lawgiver, and that universal lawgiver would have to be morally perfect.

When you unpack these three arguments completely you get a spaceless, timeless, immaterial, powerful, personal, intelligent Creator who created all things and sustains all things, and He is morally perfect at the same time. That my friend is God!

It is proof that God does exist, and these are the attributes of the God in the Bible, and I haven’t even used the Bible to prove His existence. Because God doesn’t only reveal Himself to us in the Bible but He also reveals Himself to us in the Book of nature. This is what we call natural theology that we can see God’s existence without having to open the Bible.

It is not enough to know that God exists. It is up to you to put your faith in God, in Jesus Christ believing that He is your Lord and Saviour, that He died for your sins and resurrected from the grave.
