WINNING SPIRITUAL WARFARE WITH THE FULL ARMOUR OF GOD

Spiritual warfare is a real part of every believer’s walk with God. Though we may not see the battle with our physical eyes, it rages around us daily. Thankfully, God has not left us defenceless. He has given us spiritual weapons, and one of the most powerful tools is the full armour of God.

In this post, we’ll explore what spiritual warfare is and how you can stand strong and win the battle by putting on the armour of God every day.

Let’s go!

What is Spiritual Warfare?

Spiritual warfare is the invisible battle between the Kingdom of God and the kingdom of darkness. It’s the conflict between good and evil, between God’s truth and the enemy’s lies. As believers, we are part of this battle, whether we realise it or not. We are caught in this conflict because we belong to Christ.

The enemy (Satan) wages war against God’s people through deception, temptation, confusion, fear, and other tactics meant to weaken your faith and draw you away from God’s truth.

The Bible says in Ephesians 6:12:

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

This means your battle isn’t against people, or about bad days, it’s against spiritual forces that try to attack your mind, your identity, your relationships, and your purpose; ultimately trying to oppose God’s plan and destiny for your life. The enemy doesn’t want you to know who you are in Christ or walk in your authority. But God doesn’t leave us exposed. He gives us the armour of God to fight and stand strong.

How to Win Spiritual Warfare Using the Full Armour of God

Paul gives us a detailed strategy in Ephesians 6:10-18. He lists seven pieces of spiritual armour that every Christian must wear to resist the devil, stand strong, and walk in victory.

Let’s take a closer look at each one and what it means for you practically.

1. The Belt of TruthKnow the Truth and Live By It

“Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist…” (Ephesians 6:14a)

In the Roman soldier’s armour, the belt was essential. It held the sword, stabilised the body, and kept other pieces in place. Spiritually, truth is foundational. When you build your life on God’s truth, you’re rooted and unshakable.

What does this mean for you?

  • You must know what God says about you, your situation, and your future.
  • The enemy is the father of lies (John 8:44), and his primary weapon is deception.
  • Truth exposes lies. The more you know Scripture, the easier it becomes to recognise and reject falsehoods, whether from culture, your thoughts, or others.

How to apply it daily:

  • Meditate on Scripture.
  • Align your choices with biblical truth, not trends.
  • Speak God’s truth over your life when doubt or lies arise.

2. The Breastplate of RighteousnessGuard Your Heart Through Holiness

“…with the breastplate of righteousness in place…” (Ephesians 6:14b)

The breastplate protects your heart and vital organs. Righteousness is not about being perfect, it’s about living in alignment with God through Christ. Your righteousness comes from Jesus, not your works.

Why does this matter?

  • The enemy loves to use guilt, shame, and sin to keep you spiritually weak and far from God.
  • When you walk in righteousness (right standing with God), your heart is guarded from these accusations.

How to apply it daily:

  • Confess your sins and receive God’s forgiveness.
  • Live a life that pleases God, choosing purity, integrity, and obedience.
  • Don’t let condemnation keep you from God; remember, you’re already justified in Christ (Romans 8:1).

3. Shoes of the Gospel of PeaceStay Firm and Ready to Walk in Peace

“…with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.” (Ephesians 6:15)

Just as shoes prepare a soldier for the battlefield, peace anchors your steps. The Gospel brings peace with God, and that peace gives you confidence and direction in every season.

Why does this matter?

  • When the enemy causes confusion, chaos, or fear, peace keeps you steady.
  • Peace is not the absence of problems, it’s the presence of God in the midst of them.

How to apply it daily:

  • Start your day in prayer and invite God’s peace into your mind.
  • When you’re overwhelmed, speak scriptures of peace (like Philippians 4:6-7 or Isaiah 26:3).
  • Be ready to share the Gospel with others, the message of peace and salvation.

4. The Shield of FaithUse Faith to Block the Enemy’s Attacks

“Take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.” (Ephesians 6:16)

The shield defends you from fiery darts, e.g. lies, fears, doubts, and temptations sent by the enemy to discourage or destroy you. Faith says, “I trust God no matter what I see.”

What does this mean for you?

  • Faith activates God’s promises in your life.
  • You may not always feel strong, but choosing faith over fear changes everything.

How to apply it daily:

  • Speak faith over your life.
  • Don’t let emotions rule; let God’s Word guide your responses (Proverbs 3:5).
  • When under attack, declare what you believe, even if your circumstances haven’t changed yet.

5. The Helmet of SalvationProtect Your Mind and Identity

“Take the helmet of salvation…” (Ephesians 6:17a)

The helmet guards your mind. The enemy works overtime to plant negative, destructive, or confusing thoughts. Salvation reminds you that you belong to Christ and that your mind is being renewed.

Why does this matter?

  • Your thought life is where most spiritual battles begin.
  • The enemy wants to steal your identity and make you forget who you are in Christ.

How to apply it daily:

  • Reject toxic thinking and replace it with truth.
  • Declare your identity in Christ: “I am saved, chosen, loved, and set apart.”
  • Memorise scriptures that renew your mind (like Romans 12:2 and 2 Corinthians 10:5).

6. The Sword of the Spirit (The Word of God)Fight Back with Scripture

“…and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” (Ephesians 6:17b)

This is your only offensive weapon. The Word of God isn’t just for comfort, it’s for combat. Jesus used scripture to defeat the devil in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11), and we are called to do the same.

Why is this powerful?

  • Scripture cuts through lies, fear, and darkness.
  • The Word creates, destroys, heals, and delivers. It carries the authority of God.

How to apply it daily:

  • Don’t just read the Bible, speak it out loud.
  • Use it in prayer. Use it when you’re tempted. Use it when you’re afraid.
  • Keep a few go-to verses ready for spiritual battle.

7. Prayer in the Spirit Stay Connected and Empowered

“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests…” (Ephesians 6:18a)

Though Paul doesn’t assign it a metaphorical “piece” of armour like the others, prayer is the fuel that activates and sustains the entire armour of God. Without prayer, the armour becomes something you know about but never use effectively.

Why is this powerful?

  • Prayer connects you to the power source, God Himself.
  • It keeps your spirit sensitive, your mind focused, and your heart surrendered.
  • It gives you access to heaven’s wisdom, strength, and strategy in real-time.

Praying “in the Spirit” means praying with the help and leading of the Holy Spirit, not just with your mind, but with a heart that’s aligned with God’s will. It includes spontaneous prayer, intercession, praying in tongues, and even deep groanings when you don’t have words (Romans 8:26-27).

How to apply it daily:

  • Make prayer your first response, not your last resort.
  • Pray consistently — not just when life gets hard.
  • Invite the Holy Spirit to guide your words, align your desires with God’s, and strengthen you for every battle.

Pray “on all occasions” in moments of joy, weakness, temptation, or victory. Stay alert. Be persistent. And remember: you don’t just fight on your knees, you win there.

Fighting Spiritual Warfare From Victory

You are not fighting alone, and you are not fighting for victory; you’re fighting from victory. Jesus already won the war through the cross and resurrection. Now your role is to stand firm, stay equipped, and walk in authority.

As Ephesians 6:10 reminds us:

“Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.”

You don’t have to be perfect to wear the armour. You just have to be willing to walk with God daily, stay in His Word, and rely on His strength, not your own.

Are you ready to suit up for spiritual warfare?

Ask yourself:

  • Am I wearing the full armour every day?
  • Am I standing on God’s truth, or letting lies shape me?
  • Am I fighting with the sword of the Spirit, or just surviving?
